Here are some photographs of my rockets. I have flown a variety of different kinds of cameras, each requiring different types of rockets and electronics to activate them.
The links from this page show my fleet of camera rockets. They are basically arranged in chronological order. The cameras and pictures for these rockets are on their respective Cameras and Photographs page or can be linked directly from their Rockets page.
Many years ago, I started off with a design called the Eye in the Sky and it still is around today. The cameras have changed along with some details but the overall design hasnt changed. It is considered the workhorse of my camera rocket fleet because it is a reliable, fairly easy design that I can take to just about any launch and take some pictures.
I wanted to do something big, so in 1990 I designed and built Talon. It only made one flight but a lot was gained in experience from that rocket. It combined several unique features using three cameras. It is the only camera rocket that I know of that has ever flown a large format camera.
The Nike 2000 was named after its camera, the Nikon N2000. It too went through some different paint jobs and design changes over the years but has kept its name and payload throughout. I achieved my Level 2 certification with this rocket at an Oregon launch.
I have only made a few attempts with movie cameras but have had much success. Focal Point is a movie camera rocket that has a unique design for mounting the camera. It does not require any mirrors for the camera to look down the side of the rocket.
I received my Level 3 certification with My Minds Eye at LDRS 18 in 1999. This very special camera rocket has eleven 35 mm cameras on board to take pictures from just about every angle.
My latest workhorse is Eyes in the Sky that is nearly identical to its predecessor but with two cameras on board. Two cameras on board allows twice the coverage from one flight. |
